Doctors of Chiropractic are experts in neuromusculoskeletal conditions and pathology. With 8 years of post secondary education in pathology, radiology, neuroanatomy, physiology, orthopedic, nutrition and exercise and rehabilitative sciences; chiropractors can diagnose and treat many neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
Chiropractors use a variety of different modalities and tools when treating patients. Electrical modalities, such as ultrasound and TENS units, exercise prescription, custom made orthotics, soft tissue techniques and manipulation are just to name a few. Spinal manipulative therapy or the adjustment of the spine and extremities is a manual technique, which uses high velocity low amplitude thrust to the effected joint in order to increase mobility and decrease pain.

Research supports the utilization of this technique, followed by a thorough orthopedic and neurological examination of the patient. Being one of the most effective treatments for an acute mechanical lower back pain, an adjustment is now recommended by the American College of Physicians as a primary treatment to restore motion, decrease pain and increase function.

Chiropractors treat spinal or axial conditions as well as extremity conditions such as knee, shoulder, elbow and foot conditions and pathology.

Acupuncture and Electro-Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into your body’s surface with minimal to no pain at all. The research supports the use of acupuncture and electro-acupuncture in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Needles inserted into specific points along a muscle, nerve, tendon and fascia will stimulate a physiological response that aids in our bodies ‘natural recovery process.

Electro-acupuncture is the practice of adding a small electrical current between two acupuncture needles. Electro-acupuncture effects the sympathetic nerve fibers (part of your nervous system) in your body and will increase endogenous (internal/your body’s own) opioid in the inflammatory sites, therefore reducing your pain.

Cupping:

Cupping is an ancient technique, used in many cultures, in which a special cup is applied to the skin and held in place by suction. The suction draws superficial tissue into the cup, which may either be left in place or moved along the body. Cupping brings fresh blood to the area and helps improve circulation. Traditional cupping, sometimes referred to as “fire cupping,” uses heat to create a vacuum-like suction inside of glass cups. In modern times, cups that use a small pump to create suction have also been introduced.
